In Memoriam to a Wonderful Person and an American Hero.
This wonderful man was born in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1935. Born to Otis Keith
Collins and Geneva Jordan Collins (Miss Jenny), Dave (Sonny) spent his youth
in Charlotte, N.C., active in church and Boy Scouts and earning Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Presbyterian College, was in ROTC there and entered the
Army as an officer after graduation. His career in the Army was a
distinguished one and he retired as an officer with a tour in Vietnam and
with many awards including the prestigious Soldiers Medal for Heroism. It
was after that he developed his passion for the game of golf, starting a
second career as a teaching professional. This impressive career included
teaching at some of the country's top courses including Sleepy Hollow
Country Club in New York and Doral Resort in Miami, there earning the
distinction of Master Instructor at the Jim McLean Golf Academy. He was
named Spalding Top Flite Teacher of the Western U.S. in 1998. His students
included famous names such as Arthur Ashe, Charles Schwab and several PGA,
LPGA and senior tour pros. He also loved his lessons with all his students
regardless of skill level and thrilled in watching their improvement. He was
a prolific and respected writer and has several articles published in GOLF
Magazine, Golf Illustrated and Golf for Women. He presently has a book on
golf for seniors with an agent. He was nominated several years for Golf
Magazine´s Top 50 Teachers, this year included. Dave has taught at Shadow
Valley Golf Course for the past several years. In 1994 Dave and Judy
Marshall were married. In this happy union, fueled by deep mutual love and
respect, they cherished life with each other and with friends and family.
They were the best of buddies. It was the best of times. Dave was an
extrovert. His interminable good nature and endless optimism endeared him to
everyone. He was always ready with a smile, a joke, a song, a story. He had
many many stories, almost as many stories as he had friends. Dave was easy
to like. Dave´s incredible inner strength carried him through difficult
times. He was proud to mention he was a recovered alcoholic, sober for 27
years. His quite amazing restorative powers helped him conquer numerous
health problems over the past few years. He ultimately lost the battle to
myelofibrosis and lung disease. He died with his loving family at his side.
Special thanks go to Dr. Elizabeth Olberding for her fine care and
friendship. Thanks also to her nurse Tanya, to Dr. Mary Gearn and her nurse
